British Infantry Squares: How They Stopped Cavalry in the Napoleonic Wars

Few formations are more recognisable than the Napoleonic infantry square: ranks facing outward on four sides while cavalry searches for a gap. The popular version is simple—horses will not charge bayonets, therefore a square is cavalry-proof. The historical version is more useful.

A square was a temporary combined-arms solution. It removed the exposed flank that cavalry wanted to exploit, but in exchange it reduced mobility and musket frontage and packed men into a target artillery could punish. The skill was not simply knowing how to stand in a box. It was forming at the correct moment, keeping cohesion under psychological pressure and leaving square again when cavalry ceased to be the dominant threat.

At Waterloo on 18 June 1815, Anglo-Allied squares became the most famous examples because repeated French cavalry attacks failed to turn pressure into a decisive rupture. “Square” was a family of drills, not one universal box

British War Office drill regulations from the period formalised how battalions changed formation. The 1798, 1801 and later editions of Rules and Regulations for the Formations, Field-Exercise, and Movements of His Majesty’s Forces show an army attempting to turn battlefield geometry into repeatable movement.

The exact shape depended on circumstances. A battalion with unequal company strengths or detached light companies might form an oblong. It could form from line, from a column, on central companies or around a threatened direction. The phrase “form square” therefore describes a tactical objective rather than one immutable diagram.

This is why illustrations showing a perfect four-sided formation of identical length are teaching aids. Real battalions had missing men, casualties, detached companies, rough ground and neighbouring units to consider.

Why cavalry was dangerous to infantry in line

Infantry line maximised firepower because a high proportion of muskets could shoot towards the front. Its weakness was geometric. A long thin line that was turned, struck in the flank or caught while changing formation could lose cohesion quickly.

Cavalry’s threat was therefore not that horses were simply stronger than men. Mounted troops combined speed, height, shock and the ability to reach a vulnerable direction faster than infantry could reorient. A frightened or disordered battalion might break before physical contact.

Square removed the obvious weak side. Cavalry approaching from any direction found a formed face.

What the men actually did

Depending on drill and starting formation, companies moved or wheeled to make four outward-facing faces. Bayonets were fixed and muskets presented or fired. Officers and NCOs controlled dressing and prevented gaps from opening. Colours normally remained within the protected centre.

The formation worked because every individual movement had to become collective movement. One company turning late could leave an opening. Men crowding inward could destroy firing space. Men running too far could expose the flank they were meant to close.

That is why drill matters more than the romantic image of bayonets. A theoretical square formed too slowly was no square at all.

How fast could square be formed?

There is no honest universal answer in seconds. Timings depended on the battalion’s starting formation, the prescribed method, strength, ground, noise, casualties and whether the movement occurred during a calm exercise or under approaching cavalry.

Period regulations are much more useful than modern stopwatch claims because they show the sequence of movements commanders expected troops to practise. The central battlefield question was always the same: did the infantry complete the transformation before the cavalry reached it?

Why horses did not simply smash through

The statement “a horse will never run onto bayonets” is too absolute. Horses could collide with troops. Wounded or riderless animals could crash into formations. Lancers could reach beyond the point of a bayonet. A square whose ranks had already opened could be entered.

The real problem was one of probability and formation. A cavalry charge depended on horses and riders maintaining momentum and cohesion. A steady infantry face offered musket fire, noise, dense bodies and several ranks of weapons with no obvious route through. If front horses slowed, swerved or fell, those behind lost alignment and speed.

Royal Armouries’ Waterloo material gives a useful corrective: French lancers could still inflict casualties on formed infantry because their weapons had exceptional reach. Square reduced cavalry’s options; it did not create a force field.

What cavalry could do without breaking the square

A square could be tactically successful against cavalry while still being strategically inconvenient. Cavalry could:

  • force infantry to form early and remain immobile;
  • keep the formation facing outward while artillery moved into a better position;
  • attack artillery crews, skirmishers or troops between squares;
  • probe corners and gaps;
  • wait for casualties or disorder to weaken a face;
  • threaten one direction while infantry or artillery attacked another;
  • catch a battalion during the dangerous transition between line, column and square.

Fixing enemy infantry in square could therefore be valuable even when no cavalryman physically entered it.

The greatest weakness: artillery

A square concentrated men in depth. That made it a much better target for artillery than a thin line.

Roundshot could pass through multiple bodies or ranks. At closer range canister could devastate a face. The centre also contained officers, colours, musicians and wounded men, so even shots that passed beyond the firing edge could continue to cause damage inside the formation.

The infantry commander therefore faced a timing problem. Remain in line too long and cavalry might catch the battalion exposed. Form square too early and enemy guns gained a dense stationary target.

Enemy infantry posed the other combined-arms problem

A square could fire outward, but it did not place as many muskets on one frontage as a fully deployed line. Infantry supported by artillery could therefore make a square’s defensive success against cavalry increasingly expensive.

This is the point often lost in Waterloo art. Napoleon’s armies did not normally teach cavalry to solve every battlefield problem alone. The ideal was cooperation among cavalry, artillery, infantry and skirmishers. When that cooperation failed or arrived out of sequence, the square could survive.

Quatre Bras: what happened when cavalry caught infantry wrong

The campaign immediately before Waterloo provides the warning example. At Quatre Bras on 16 June 1815, British battalions suffered heavily when French cavalry struck troops that were not securely protected by completed squares.

Royal Armouries notes the severe losses inflicted by French lancers on the 42nd and 44th Foot. The lesson is not that these units “forgot” square. Battlefield formations were being moved, attacked and disrupted in a rapidly changing fight. Cavalry’s greatest opportunities came before the ideal defensive shape had been achieved.

Waterloo: why the formation became legendary

On 18 June large French cavalry attacks developed against Wellington’s centre-right. Allied infantry formed numerous squares and oblongs. Calling them all “British squares” is historically misleading: Wellington’s army included British, King’s German Legion, Hanoverian, Dutch-Belgian, Nassau and Brunswick troops.

The terrain behind the ridge complicated cavalry movement. British and Allied artillery crews could shelter inside nearby squares when cavalry arrived and return to their guns when the mounted threat receded. French cavalry therefore sometimes occupied the gun line without permanently neutralising the guns.

The National Army Museum summarises the central problem: Ney’s cavalry attacked in great strength but without the sufficiently coordinated artillery and infantry support needed to turn the squares’ immobility into destruction.

How the Waterloo cavalry phase unfolded

1. The Allied centre remains under pressure

By mid-to-late afternoon Wellington’s position had absorbed attacks around Hougoumont, d’Erlon’s earlier infantry assault and sustained artillery fire. The battle was not fresh when the cavalry phase began.

2. Ney interprets movement as retreat

Movement behind the ridge contributed to Ney’s belief that Wellington might be withdrawing. French cavalry was committed against the centre-right.

3. Battalions form square

Infantry closed into all-round defensive formations. Gunners abandoned exposed pieces temporarily and sought protection as mounted troops crossed the ridge.

4. Cavalry circulates and attacks

The French could approach, fire pistols, thrust with swords or lances and force the squares to remain formed. They could not create enough lasting openings for a general infantry collapse.

5. The attackers withdraw and return

Mounted formations lost order as horses tired and units intermingled. Allied artillerymen returned to guns when space opened. Further French cavalry formations joined, creating repeated pressure rather than one single cinematic charge.

6. The combined-arms opportunity is missed

If infantry and artillery had been coordinated more closely with the cavalry at the critical moments, the squares would have faced a far more dangerous dilemma. Instead they were repeatedly allowed to solve one threat at a time.

The famous paintings are not photographs

Nineteenth-century Waterloo art made the infantry square into a symbol of steadiness. The images are useful because they show how later generations understood the battle. They are not exact visual records of one battalion at one minute.

The current Regimental Record hero image by Alexandre Protais is a later artistic interpretation. It should be read alongside drill manuals, participant accounts and battlefield studies rather than used to infer exact spacing or dress.

Could a formed square actually be broken?

Yes. A square could fail if:

  • cavalry arrived before formation was complete;
  • troops were already shaken or exhausted;
  • a face lost cohesion through casualties;
  • artillery created gaps;
  • infantry fire added pressure while cavalry fixed the formation;
  • ground or obstacles prevented companies taking their intended positions;
  • panic spread from neighbouring troops.

The historical lesson is therefore not “square beats cavalry”. It is “formed, disciplined infantry makes unsupported cavalry attack extraordinarily difficult”. The adjectives matter.

Squares were psychological machines

For the soldier, the geometry was only half the problem. Men had to stand while cavalry approached at speed. They could see horses and riders through smoke, hear artillery and watch wounded men pulled into the centre. The temptation to fire too early, step backwards or close around a perceived gap could undermine the whole formation.

Officers and NCOs therefore managed morale as well as alignment. Musket discipline mattered: an uncontrolled volley at long range could leave the face reloading when cavalry finally closed.

Casualties inside the square

Later memoirs describe the interiors of Waterloo squares filling with wounded and dead. That image is important because it strips away the idea of the square as a clean parade-ground box. The formation could remain tactically unbroken while suffering serious human damage.

It also shows why “not broken by cavalry” is not synonymous with “safe”. A square might survive mounted attack and still be punished by guns, skirmishers and fatigue.

Why Ney’s cavalry failed at Waterloo

  • The infantry was largely formed before contact. Cavalry lost the easiest opportunity: catching open flanks.
  • The squares retained discipline. Repeated pressure did not produce general panic.
  • The ridge and battlefield clutter disrupted mounted cohesion.
  • French arms were poorly synchronised at decisive moments. Cavalry often arrived without enough immediate infantry/artillery exploitation.
  • Horses and riders tired. Repeated attacks reduced the freshness needed for shock action.
  • The wider battle constrained French options. Prussian arrival increasingly consumed reserves elsewhere.

The formation beyond the British myth

Square was not a uniquely British invention. European armies used related anti-cavalry formations, and French infantry itself formed squares when threatened by enemy horse. Waterloo made the British and Allied version culturally famous because it became attached to the final defeat of Napoleon.

The tactical idea was much older than 1815: infantry had long used dense all-round formations when threatened by mounted troops. What changed over time were weapons, drill systems, battalion organisation and the speed at which trained troops could transition between formations.

What the sources can and cannot tell us

British War Office drill regulations tell us what battalions were supposed to practise. They do not prove that every battlefield formation achieved the manual perfectly.

Participant memoirs are powerful evidence for fear, disorder and local action, but many were written years later and can compress timings or absorb later battlefield stories.

National Army Museum and Royal Armouries collections combine artefacts, contemporary or near-contemporary artwork and documentary interpretation. They are particularly useful for connecting weapons to tactical behaviour.

Waterloo paintings should be used as visual memory, not photographic documentation.

For that reason Iron Regiment avoids claims that every square was four ranks deep, perfectly equal-sided or formed in a fixed number of seconds. The drill systems were real; the battlefield was less tidy.
