The infantry square — The infantry square became one of the most recognisable battlefield formations of the Napoleonic Wars, designed to present an outward-facing wall of bayonets and fire against cavalry.

History behind the design

Its success depended on discipline, timing and cohesion. A square that held could be extremely difficult for cavalry to break; one that lost formation could be destroyed.
