Crécy 1346: Did the Longbow Really Win the Battle?

Crécy is often reduced to a weapon story: English longbows beat French knights. The battle on 26 August 1346 was more complicated. Edward III had spent six weeks conducting a destructive chevauchée across Normandy and northern France, escaped a tightening French pursuit by forcing a crossing of the Somme, then deliberately stopped and chose ground on which a larger army would have to attack him.

The longbow mattered enormously. The harder question is why it mattered, and whether it deserves to be treated as the single decisive cause. Edward’s archers operated inside a combined defensive system: dismounted men-at-arms, selected ground, ammunition supply, battlefield discipline and a command structure that held together while repeated French attacks lost cohesion.

Why Edward III was in France

Crécy belonged to the first major phase of the Hundred Years’ War. Edward III held lands in France while also claiming the French crown after the succession crisis of 1328. Disputes over sovereignty in Aquitaine, alliances in the Low Countries and Edward’s later assumption of the French royal title turned a long feudal argument into a dynastic war.

The 1346 campaign: a chevauchée with strategic purpose

Edward landed in the Cotentin peninsula in July 1346. His army moved through Normandy destroying property, taking towns and damaging the French crown’s ability to protect its subjects. Caen was stormed and sacked. The English then moved east towards the Seine and the Paris region before turning north.

A chevauchée was not simply a raid by men seeking loot. Destruction was intended to create political pressure. If Philip VI could not stop an enemy army burning towns and estates inside his kingdom, royal authority suffered. Edward also wanted to force the French king to respond on terms favourable to the English field army.

The cost was borne heavily by civilians. Farms, villages and urban populations were part of the strategy’s target set because taxation, food and political obedience rested on them.

The river problem: the Seine and Somme

Campaign maps explain Crécy better than a battlefield diagram alone. Edward’s army could not simply march anywhere it liked. Bridges and fords across major rivers were controlled, destroyed or defended. Philip’s forces increasingly restricted the English route while Edward attempted to move towards the Channel and possible allies in Flanders.

The Somme became the critical obstacle. French forces guarded crossings and the English risked being trapped with the river in front and Philip’s army approaching from behind.

Blanchetaque: the crossing before the battle

On 24 August the English forced a crossing at the tidal ford of Blanchetaque. The action was dangerous because a blocked crossing could have ended the campaign before Crécy ever happened. Once across the Somme, Edward had escaped the immediate operational trap and gained room to choose where to stand.

He did not continue fleeing indefinitely. Near Crécy-en-Ponthieu he halted and prepared for battle.

Where exactly was Crécy fought?

The battle certainly took place close to Crécy-en-Ponthieu, but the precise site is not as secure as many maps imply. The traditional battlefield was fixed in detail by the eighteenth-century Cassini mapping tradition and became the accepted location for generations. Documentary references written close to the battle support the general association with Crécy, but they do not provide modern coordinates.

Modern scholarship has therefore reopened the question. Michael Livingston argues that the traditional site cannot satisfactorily fit the campaign movement, topography and narrative evidence and proposes a battlefield roughly 5.5 km farther south. A different scholarly treatment by Philip Preston accepts that the traditional location rests partly on inherited tradition and that some features require re-explanation, but concludes that the documentary and limited archaeological evidence do not decisively prove an alternative site.

The English defensive system

Whatever exact field is preferred, the broad tactical relationship is strongly supported: the English had stopped, organised and rested before the French army completed its arrival. Edward’s men-at-arms dismounted and the archers were deployed to support the main line.

That distinction matters. The English were not surprised in march column. The French were trying to bring a very large aristocratic army into action after movement and pursuit.

Later accounts describe field preparations, baggage positioning and other defensive measures. Some details vary between chroniclers. The strongest conclusions do not depend on reconstructing every ditch or hedge.

Key personalities

Edward III

Edward was an experienced campaigner by 1346. His most important decision at Crécy may have occurred before the first arrow: stopping after crossing the Somme and accepting battle from a prepared position. The victory rewarded operational decisions made before Philip’s army arrived.

Philip VI

Philip faced the political humiliation of an English army moving destructively through his kingdom. His army contained powerful princes and retinues whose status complicated battlefield control. Later English narratives often turn him into a foil for Edward; the more useful question is how a large force arriving in pieces could be halted, reorganised and coordinated under intense pressure to attack.

Edward of Woodstock

The Prince of Wales was only sixteen. Later chivalric memory made Crécy an initiation story for the future Black Prince. The famous tale that Edward III refused a request for help so his son could “win his spurs” survives in later narrative tradition and should not be treated as a verbatim command exchange. The forward English division was, however, heavily engaged.

John of Bohemia

John, king of Bohemia, was blind by 1346 and died in the battle. Later accounts describe him having his horse tied to those of companions so he could enter the fighting. The detail fits chivalric storytelling and cannot be independently verified, but his death is certain and illustrates the extraordinary concentration of elite casualties among Philip’s allies.

The longbow: what it could actually do

The English longbow combined high draw weight, rapid shooting in trained hands and a large battlefield footprint when hundreds or thousands of archers worked together. Its effect should not be explained by one claim that arrows effortlessly pierced every suit of plate armour.

Fourteenth-century armour varied greatly in quality and coverage. Arrows could strike faces, limbs, joints and less protected areas; wound or kill horses; force men to close visors or alter posture; and disrupt the timing and cohesion of an attack. Even where strong armour prevented penetration, sustained missile fire imposed physical and psychological pressure.

The weapon also depended on logistics. A high shooting rate is useful only while arrows remain available. Medieval English expeditionary systems therefore had to acquire, transport and distribute very large quantities of ammunition.

Why not simply compare longbow and crossbow?

The Genoese crossbowmen were experienced professional soldiers, not technological relics. A crossbow could deliver a powerful bolt and required different training from a longbow. Crossbow units often worked with large shields called pavises that offered protection during loading.

At Crécy, the problem was not that crossbows were universally useless. The Genoese were ordered forward against a prepared missile system while the French deployment behind them remained congested. Chroniclers discuss rain, wet strings and the absence or delay of pavises, but the exact importance of these details is disputed.

Battle chronology

The French army arrives

Philip’s forces approached after a demanding march. Some accounts indicate that senior men favoured halting and waiting for the army to assemble more coherently. Once fighting began, political and chivalric momentum made it difficult to impose a clean pause.

The Genoese advance

Crossbowmen moved forward first and exchanged missiles with the English archers. The Genoese attack failed to suppress the longbowmen and the crossbowmen began to fall back.

Retreat collides with advance

French men-at-arms were already pressing forward. Retreating missile troops and advancing mounted contingents became entangled. Some narrative sources describe French nobles attacking the Genoese themselves in anger. Whatever the exact sequence, the opening had already damaged coordination.

Repeated French attacks

French men-at-arms attacked the English position repeatedly. Each assault had to approach under archery, negotiate ground increasingly cluttered by men and horses, and then fight dismounted English men-at-arms holding a compact line.

Numbers did not disappear, but a larger army could not put every man into the front rank at once. Successive forces entered a battlefield already disrupted by earlier failures.

The Prince of Wales’s division holds

The English forward division faced severe fighting. This produced the later story of assistance being requested and Edward III refusing to rescue his son prematurely. The anecdote may be polished, but the tactical point survives: Edward did not commit his whole command in panic and the defensive structure held.

Nightfall

French attacks failed to break the English line. Philip VI was wounded and withdrew. Many senior nobles were dead. Fighting and scattered arrivals continued into the evening and following morning in some accounts, making the boundary between the main battle and aftermath less tidy than a modern end time suggests.

Why did the French attacks fail?

  • Edward chose the conditions of battle. The English army was deployed before Philip’s force completed its arrival.
  • Archers and men-at-arms worked as a system. Missile disruption was backed by a close-combat line capable of receiving attackers.
  • French command was fragmented. A huge aristocratic host was difficult to halt, reorganise and feed into battle in one controlled sequence.
  • Congestion accumulated. Retreating troops, dead horses and repeated assaults made later attacks harder rather than easier.
  • The English retained cohesion. The defensive force did not need to pursue every local success.

Were cannons used?

Several sources and later interpretations associate small English gunpowder weapons with Crécy. Early artillery was certainly appearing in European warfare by this period. The scale and battlefield effect at Crécy remain debated.

Even if guns were present, they were not the main explanation for the victory. Their importance lies more in showing that the battle took place during technological transition than in proving an artillery-driven result.

Casualties: what can be said safely

French losses among the nobility were exceptionally high. John of Bohemia and many counts, lords and knights were killed. Chroniclers give very large aggregate totals, but those figures cannot be treated as modern casualty returns.

English losses were much lighter. Again, precise small numbers in later narratives can be part of the same literary contrast that magnifies a miraculous victory.

The safest conclusion is relative rather than numerically theatrical: the French suffered a severe battlefield disaster and disproportionately heavy elite casualties; Edward’s army remained operational.

Crécy did not prove the knight was obsolete

English armies themselves depended on heavily armoured men-at-arms. French men-at-arms continued to win battles throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Plate armour developed further rather than disappearing.

The lesson of Crécy was integration. A longbowman was most effective when the enemy had to approach him, when men-at-arms protected the position and when commanders had enough control to prevent a successful defence turning into an uncontrolled pursuit.

The strategic result: Calais

Edward did not march straight to Paris after the victory. He moved to Calais and began a siege that lasted until 1347. The town’s capture gave England a secure Channel port and logistical base that survived every later phase of the Hundred Years’ War.

This may be Crécy’s most important strategic consequence. Battlefield victory created the freedom to take a permanent bridgehead.

Source genealogy: how the Crécy story was built

Administrative records and letters close to 1346 are strongest for campaign preparation, payments, retinues, routes and the broad fact of where events occurred. They are less useful for reconstructing every minute of combat.

Jean le Bel wrote close to the period and is fundamental to the narrative tradition. Jean Froissart then became the most influential storyteller of the battle. His chronicles preserve invaluable material but were revised, written for aristocratic audiences and shaped by chivalric storytelling.

Later cartography and battlefield tradition fixed a precise landscape more confidently than the medieval written evidence itself. Cassini’s eighteenth-century mapping is therefore evidence for the history of the battlefield’s identification, not direct evidence for where Edward’s archers stood in 1346.

Modern military history adds route reconstruction, logistics, topography and comparative weapon studies. That improves the analysis, but modern reconstructions can still disagree sharply because the medieval evidence does not resolve every question.

Competing explanations

The weapon-first explanation makes the longbow the decisive technology. It captures one real advantage but risks turning a combined-arms system into a hardware contest.

The command-and-cohesion explanation gives greater weight to Edward’s decision to stop, dismount his men-at-arms and force a less coordinated enemy to attack. This explains why the same weapon did not automatically produce victory in every battle.

The terrain-and-location explanation asks whether historians have been analysing the correct ground at all. If the alternative battlefield proposed by Livingston were securely demonstrated, some long-standing tactical diagrams would need substantial revision.

Iron Regiment’s current judgement is that Crécy was won by an integrated defensive system in which massed archery was crucial but not independently sufficient.

What would change our mind?

  • A securely dated concentration of battle archaeology tied to 1346 on either the traditional or proposed alternative field.
  • Newly identified contemporary correspondence giving specific topographical markers that can be matched reliably to the modern landscape.
  • Systematic archaeological survey across competing proposed battlefield areas rather than isolated finds or inherited tradition.
  • New experimental work on fourteenth-century bows, arrows and armour that materially changes the credible range of missile effects.

This section matters because a historical argument should be capable of being revised. If evidence cannot possibly alter the conclusion, it is a story of belief rather than an investigation.
