Pike and Shot: Did Firearms Really Make the Pike Obsolete?

Pike and shot was not a confused halfway house between medieval weapons and modern firearms. It was a working solution to a real tactical problem. Early gunpowder infantry could deliver increasingly dangerous fire, but matchlock muskets were slow to load, awkward to handle and vulnerable when cavalry or determined infantry reached them before they could fire again. Pikemen had almost no ranged effect, yet they could protect musketeers, hold ground and give a regiment close-combat structure.
The central question is therefore not “why did armies keep obsolete pikes?” but what had firearms not yet solved?
European armies spent more than a century changing depth, frontage, weapon ratios, drill and command systems. There was no single universal pike-and-shot formation. Spanish, Dutch, Swedish, Imperial, French, English and Scottish practice differed by place and period.
The evidence problem: drill is not battle
Seventeenth-century drill books are unusually valuable because they show weapon handling, ranks, files, postures and formal movements. The National Army Museum, for example, preserves Thomas Jenner’s 1642 pike and musket drill imagery as evidence for how Civil War soldiers were instructed.
But a manual is a prescriptive source. It tells us what soldiers were meant to do under organised conditions. It does not prove that every regiment executed the sequence cleanly while tired, hungry, frightened, under fire and half-blinded by powder smoke.
Battle accounts, muster returns, archaeology, surviving weapons, administrative records and manuals therefore have to be read together. The ideal drill and battlefield reality were related; they were never identical.
The matchlock musket
The matchlock used a smouldering cord—the match—to ignite priming powder. A musketeer had to manage powder, ball, ramrod, match and weapon while keeping loose powder away from the burning cord.
Reloading consisted of separate actions. Collective drill mattered because firepower depended on organising many men so that a unit could keep weapons coming into action while others reloaded.
How fast could a musketeer really fire?
Exact rates quoted from modern demonstrations can create false precision. Controlled firing is not battle. Fouling, damp, smoke, misfires, broken equipment, stress, crowding and command delay all reduced practical performance.
The useful question is not “how many rounds per minute could the best man fire?” but “how much controlled fire could a formation sustain before order, ammunition or weapon reliability broke down?”
Why the pike stayed
A long steel-tipped pike presented mounted attackers with a dense barrier. Before an effective bayonet allowed every firearm soldier to become his own spear-bearer, isolated musketeers in open country were vulnerable to cavalry.
Pikes also mattered in infantry fighting. They protected colours and command groups, threatened close approach and helped give a regiment physical cohesion when shooting turned into hand-to-hand combat.
This is why pikes survived long after firearms were clearly lethal. Their continued use is evidence that the firearm had not yet replaced every battlefield function.
What proportion carried muskets and pikes?
The National Army Museum gives a useful English Civil War rule of thumb: about two-thirds of a foot regiment armed with matchlock muskets and one-third with sixteen-foot pikes. That is a good orientation point, not a universal ratio for every army, year or battlefield.
Official establishments, actual unit strengths and the formation present on a particular day could differ. Casualties, desertion, detachments, shortages and local practice changed the real balance.

Where did the musketeers stand?
A common diagram places a central body of pikes with musketeer “sleeves” on the flanks. That is useful, but not a template to paste onto every battlefield.
Musketeers could be detached into hedges, ditches, villages and other ground where firearms were useful and long pikes cumbersome. At Naseby, dragoons firing from hedged ground show why battlefield terrain could produce a deployment very different from a manual’s clean rectangle.
Formation depth and frontage
Deep formations provided resilience and could support systems in which ranks fired and moved while others prepared weapons. But every extra rank reduced the number of firearms influencing the front at one time and presented dense targets to artillery.
Dutch reforms associated with Maurice of Nassau are often linked with standardised drill and reduced depth; Swedish practice under Gustavus Adolphus is associated with shallower formations and concentrated fire. Those innovations mattered, but the idea of a single “military revolution” moving uniformly across Europe is heavily debated.
Armies borrowed, adapted and ignored ideas according to their circumstances.
Was “push of pike” really a literal pushing contest?
The phrase appears in period and later descriptions, but it is easy to turn it into a modern reenactment cliché in which two perfect blocks lock together and shove until one falls over.
Close combat could involve pikes, swords, halberds, musket butts and short-range shooting amid broken order. The exact mechanics depended on terrain and formation state. “Push of pike” is evidence for close pike fighting; it is not a universal choreography.
Cavalry: winning the charge was only half the job
Cavalry looked for exposed musketeers, open flanks, disordered infantry and enemy horse. Formed pikes made direct attack far less attractive.
The deeper command problem was what happened after cavalry won. Pursuit could be useful because routed enemies might otherwise rally, but mounted troops chasing too far ceased to influence the decisive battle. Marston Moor and Naseby both demonstrate the value of cavalry that could recover and attack a second target.
Artillery against pike and shot
Roundshot could pass through dense ranks and closer-range anti-personnel ammunition could cause severe casualties. But Civil War field artillery was relatively slow and difficult to move compared with later artillery systems.
The National Army Museum describes Civil War guns as cumbersome and often more useful in siege warfare than on the open battlefield. That should not be misread as “artillery did not matter”; it means commanders could not manoeuvre batteries with the speed expected in later centuries.
Command in smoke
Black-powder battlefields rapidly filled with smoke. Drums, trumpets, flags and mounted officers helped formations orient themselves. Once visibility collapsed, central control became slower and local initiative mattered more.
This is a reason to distrust narratives that make every regiment execute perfectly synchronised movement across a wide front. Commanders influenced battles; they did not possess real-time overhead control.
Marston Moor: the system under coalition pressure
At Marston Moor in 1644, Royalist and allied armies used broadly comparable pike-and-shot systems. The decisive difference was not a secret Parliamentarian firearm.
Parts of the allied centre and right were driven back. On the left, however, allied cavalry associated with Cromwell and Scottish support defeated the Royalist horse and then returned to influence the wider battle. Infantry already engaged to the front became vulnerable when mounted troops attacked flank and rear.

Naseby: the New Model did not invent pike and shot
The New Model Army inherited European pike-and-shot practice rather than creating a new weapon system. At Naseby, Royalist infantry fought effectively and Rupert defeated Parliament’s left-wing cavalry. Parliament won because the army absorbed those crises while Cromwell’s successful wing returned toward the centre.
The lesson is organisational: a local victory only becomes decisive when a force can exploit it.

Was one side more “modern”?
Not in the simple technological sense. Royalists and Parliamentarians recruited from the same society, bought comparable weapons and participated in the same European military culture.
Parliament’s later edge came from resources, national organisation, financing and the New Model Army’s ability to sustain operations. Calling one side “modern” and the other “medieval” obscures more than it explains.
From matchlock to flintlock
Flintlock mechanisms reduced dependence on a constantly burning match and simplified some handling problems. Adoption was gradual. Different locks coexisted for years because weapons systems change through procurement and logistics, not simply invention dates.
Did the bayonet kill the pike?
Eventually it made a specialist pikeman much harder to justify, but again the transition was not instantaneous.
The early plug bayonet turned a musket into a spear by inserting a blade into the muzzle, preventing firing. The socket bayonet fitted around the barrel and allowed a musket to remain capable of fire while carrying a fixed blade.
Once firearm infantry could present a credible close-combat point without giving up its shooting role, the specialist pike lost its central justification. By the early eighteenth century it had largely disappeared from major western European field infantry.
The key phrase is largely disappeared, not “became obsolete on the day the bayonet was invented.” Procurement, doctrine and local military practice moved at different speeds.
Source genealogy: from drill plate to battlefield myth
Drill manuals such as Thomas Jenner’s The Military Discipline are primary evidence for formal instruction and weapon handling. They are not action reports.
Muster and establishment records help reconstruct intended weapon ratios and unit size. They do not automatically tell us how many men reached a battlefield or which weapons were still serviceable.
Battle dispatches, memoirs and newsbooks show soldiers under pressure but are politically interested, selective and often written without a complete view of the field.
Surviving weapons and armour tell us what equipment existed and how it was constructed. They rarely prove how one regiment used it at one moment.
Battlefield archaeology can reveal shot distributions and areas of combat, although recovery bias and later disturbance must be considered.
Modern “military revolution” theories provide powerful frameworks for change in firepower, formations and states. They remain interpretations, not primary evidence.

Competing explanations for the decline of the pike
The technology explanation gives the bayonet primary credit. It identifies a decisive technical solution but can make change appear instantaneous.
The firepower explanation stresses the increasing proportion and effectiveness of firearms. As musketry improved, each pikeman represented a man not firing.
The organisational explanation points to better drill, shallower formations and standing forces that made coordinated fire more dependable.
The cavalry-threat explanation explains why the pike survived: as long as musketeers remained vulnerable while reloading, removing all pikes created risk.
Iron Regiment’s current judgement is that the pike disappeared because improved firearms, drill and the socket bayonet progressively transferred its protective function to the firearm infantryman himself.
What would change our mind?
- New muster or issue records demonstrating materially different real-world weapon ratios from those normally reconstructed.
- Battlefield archaeology showing pikes or musketeers deployed in ways consistently incompatible with surviving drill systems.
- New dating for bayonet adoption that materially changes the chronology of pike disappearance.
- Primary tactical writing demonstrating that a supposedly “obsolete” weapon retained a different battlefield purpose later than currently understood.

- “Pikes were obsolete as soon as firearms appeared.” False.
- “Musketeers fought like modern riflemen.” Misleading; collective drill and formation fire were central.
- “The English Civil War had uniquely English tactics.” False; both sides operated within wider European military culture.
- “The New Model won because of a new weapon.” False; its major advantages were organisational and strategic.
- “Cavalry just charged.” Incomplete; rallying, reserve, flank action and return to the main battle could matter more than the first impact.
