The Anglo-Saxon shield wall — The shield wall was a close-order infantry formation built on cohesion, overlapping protection and the determination of men to hold their place in the line.
History behind the design
It is closely associated with Anglo-Saxon warfare and the 1066 campaign. At Hastings, Harold Godwinson's army relied on a strong defensive line on the ridge against repeated Norman attacks.
